Matt James Named First Black Lead on ‘The Bachelor’

ABC’s long-running show “The Bachelor” and its female-led companion show “The Bachelorette” have been around for 18 years and 40 seasons! But of all those seasons, all those relationships, and all that drama, only one black person has ever been cast in the leading role (Rachel Lindsay in 2017, if you’re keeping score).

Fans of the show, in the wake of social justice movements spawned by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, put together a movement, demanding some change. After a petition was created, over 85,000 people signed to show their support. Their mission was clear: ABC needed to cast another black lead for the popular dating show.

And “The Bachelor” listened!

Meet Matt James, the first black male lead in the show’s history.

Matt is 28 years old, a real estate broker, and an organizer for community groups. Sounds like a quality candidate for the show, no matter his race, but fans will be glad to see that ABC’s casting choice reflects the diverse world we live in.
