2020 JUNO Awards Recap: Shawn Mendes, Avril Lavigne Win Big
Canada has given us some pretty great musicians. Also some pretty sh*tty ones, to be honest. But every year, the JUNO Awards honor the best of the best in Canadian music, and this 2020 was no different.
Well, it was a little different. The awards show didn’t happen in-person, which isn’t a huge surprise given the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of virtual events. But the quality of the music was still the same!
Shawn Mendes, born in Toronto, took home Best Single of the Year for “Señorita” and Best Artist for the Year. He’s now scored 10 total JUNOs. Alessia Cara, originally from Brampton, Canada, won big with three different awards, including Best Pop Album for her release, The Pains of Growing.
But the Juno Fan Choice went in a very different direction than what most American audiences would expect. After all the votes were tallied, Avril Lavigne picked up the W! Turns out she’s Canadian too. Who would’ve known.
