The Weeknd was not happy after the 2021 Grammy nominations were announced and he was not on the list.
He called out the Recording Academy on Twitter saying, “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…”

The Recording Academy’s interim president and CEO Harvey Mason Jr. addressed the snub, saying the decision came down to the number of votes and limited slots in each category.
He told Billboard, “For The Weeknd, in every year you only have a certain amount of people you can nominate for each category. … We are excited about some of the other categories where he was nominated. It’s never easy to tell where people are going to land.”
He also addressed the speculation that the Grammys gave The Weeknd an ultimatum: perform at the Grammys or the Super Bowl prior saying, “We understand that The Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent…We were thrilled when we found out he would be performing at the upcoming Super Bowl and we would have loved to have him also perform on the Grammy stage the weekend before …To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before The Weeknd’s performance at the Super Bowl was announced, so in no way could it have affected the nomination process.”
