Brandy Agrees To Partnership With Motown Records

Singer-songwriter, producer, actress, and entrepreneur Brandy has signed a partnership with Motown Records.

Their first joint venture will see Motown Records making their debut release of an upcoming album by the Grammy Award-winning R&B icon very soon. It will be Brandy's eighth full-length album.

Brandy said she always wanted to work with Ethiopia Habtemariam, Motown's CEO and chairwoman.

"I've just always thought that she was just a bad-ass Black woman who loves music, knows music, and I saw her work her way up because she's so talented," Brandy said.

She added, "So when I heard that she was who she is now at Motown, I was like, 'If I ever were to go back to a major label, I would want to work with Ethiopia.' And it happened."

"Brandy is one of the most prolific voices in the history of music," said Habtemariam. "Her contribution to R&B continues to influence newcomers and contemporaries around the world. We are ecstatic to welcome Brandy to the Motown family and eager to join her in making musical history."

Chris Brown & Normani Share Steamy

Chris Brown & Normani Share Steamy "WE (Warm Embrace)" Video

The music video for Chris Brown's latest single, "WE (Warm Embrace)," shows the singer getting very intimate with Normani.

The visual, directed by Arrad, shot at the Invisible House in Joshua Tree, California, begins with a sneak peak snippet of Brown's track "Sleep At night." It shows the R&B superstar abruptly waking up after a dream, and then find Normani showing her sultry side in a silk bustier slip dress that sweeps the floor she and Brown waltz on. The two slip out of their titular warm embrace and cool off with an underwater kiss as he croons, "Take my chance and dive into your ocean."

The "WE (Warm Embrace)" track, which was originally released on April 1, peaked at No. 11 on the Hot R&B Songs chart and No. 28 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart.

The "WE (Warm Embrace)" video follows the release of Brown's infectious new single "Call Me Every Day" featuring WizKid.

H.E.R. Files Lawsuit Seeking Release From Label

H.E.R. Files Lawsuit Seeking Release From Label

R&B singer-songwriter H.E.R. has filed a lawsuit against record label MBK Entertainment in California Superior Court in Los Angeles seeking release from her contract.

In her complaint, H.E.R., born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, says she wants to be released from her contract under the claim that it forces her to work "beyond seven years after May 19, 2011," which allegedly violates California Labor Code 2855, also known as the "Seven Year Rule" that "prohibits the enforcement beyond seven years of a contract (such as the Agreement) to render services of a special, unique, extraordinary or intellectual character."

"Wilson has not been free to provide her recording services except as permitted or dictated by MBK," the complaint, written by her attorney Allen Grodsky, reads. Wilson signed with MBK on May 19, 2011, when she was 14 years old.

The documents allegedly state that Wilson is an "exclusive employee" for the "initial period" that "ended the later of 15 months after May 19, 2011, or 12 months after the commercial release in the United States of Wilson's first album under the contract, and up to five additional Option Periods of more than one year each."

The record label has supposedly "significantly limited" H.E.R.'s "employment rights" by not allowing her "to provide her recording services except as permitted or dictated by MBK," as well as "exclusively owned the right to exploit her name and likeness for her recordings."

H.E.R. also claims that Jeff Robinson, as her manager, fired the legal team that represented her and replaced them with his attorneys. Those lawyers, however, "took 5% of the deals they negotiated, but did not have a written fee agreement or a conflict waiver signed by Wilson, and said that they performed the services 'as a favor' to their client Robinson who was paid 20% commission for each of those deals."

Wilson is now seeking a "judicial declaration that the Agreement is voidable and may not be enforced against Plaintiff under California law to the extent it purports to require Plaintiff's services after May 18, 2019."
